On 8th May 2024, Ambassador Cecilia Attard-Pirotta and First Secretary Mr Charles Calleja welcomed the Head of the Islamic Waqf, Sheik Raiq Khatib, and Mr Deeb Othman, the financial controller of the Waqf, at the Embassy in Tel Aviv. The meeting was a follow-up to the visit by the Embassy officials to Kfar Yassif last August, during which the Maltese officials witnessed firsthand the work carried out by the Waqf amongst the different communities in the North of Israel. This meeting focused on education and culture, exploring avenues for strengthening cooperation within these sectors.

Recalling and condemning the atrocious attacks of October 7th in the South of Israel, the Ambassador and the Sheik also expressed their concern about the loss of civilian lives in Gaza, with both expressing the hope for the quick and safe return of all the hostages still retained in Gaza.

Expressing their commitment to fostering closer ties through educational and cultural initiatives, the two delegations exchanged views on the possibility of embarking on an exchange program to facilitate people-to-people contact between Malta and the residents in Northern Israel.
The guests from the Islamic Waqf were accompanied by Mr Steven Aiello, who plays a pivotal role in implementing youth programs in towns and villages across Northern Israel. His presence underscored the shared commitment to empowering youth through educational opportunities and community engagement initiatives, instilling a sense of hope and inspiration. Mr. Steven Aiello is the Director of the Debate for Peace program in Israel, renowned for its efforts in bringing Arab and Jewish students together.

Ambassador Attard-Pirotta and First Secretary Mr Charles Calleja expressed their deep appreciation for the ongoing efforts of the Islamic Waqf in promoting educational initiatives and fostering dialogue. They emphasized the significant role of such collaboration in advancing mutual understanding and promoting peaceful coexistence by making the audience feel valued and integral to the process.
