National Day Reception organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Tunis

Celebrating Independence Day, on 21st September 2016 the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Tunis organized a reception in honour of Malta’s National Day. The Embassy was honoured to welcome the Minister of Youth and Sport, H.E. Majdouline Cherni, the Minister of Transport H.E. Anis Ghedira, and the Secretary of State within the Ministry of Youth and Sport in charge of Youth, H.E. Faten Kallel.

This event was also attended by the Diplomatic community accredited to Tunis, the EU Embassies accredited to Libya that are currently relocated in Tunis, as well as the Maltese community in Tunis.

This event, hosted by the Chargé d’Affaires of Malta in Tunis, Mr. Bernard Charles Mifsud, was very well attended and provided an opportunity for the Maltese community to celebrate Malta’s National Day.

In brief remarks delivered at the event, the Chargé d’Affaires noted the long history of bilateral relations between Malta and Tunisia since the establishment of relations in 1967, as well as the recent major visits of the Hon. Dr George W. Vella, Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs to Tunis in May 2015, H.E. Khemaies Jhinaoui, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia’s visit to Malta in May 2016, as well as the most important working visit of H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta to Tunisia in April 2016. The Chargé d’Affaires also welcomed the Maltese community in Tunisia noting that they are, on many occasions, the first contact Tunisians have with Malta.

The Chargé d’Affaires also noted the establishment of the new Government of National Unity in Tunisia and the challenges the new government faces. Referring to Malta’s EU Presidency starting in January 2017, the Chargé d’Affaires highlighted the importance Malta will give to Mediterranean affairs during Malta’s term as EU Presidency, with Tunisia being considered an important interlocutor during this period.

The reception was hosted at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Gammarth, Tunis.
