Ms. Francesca Cassar, Economic and Development
Coordinator at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations, has been elected by acclamation by the UN General Assembly to serve as
Rapporteur of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) for the upcoming
77th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Ms. Cassar’s nomination was presented and endorsed
by the Western European and Others Group in the months prior to the election and as Rapporteur of the Second Committee, will oversee the preparation and presentation of the final report of the Committee to the UN
General Assembly.

Bulgaria to the UN.
The Second Committee of the UN General Assembly
deals with issues relating to development and economic growth and meets every
year in early October and completes its main work by December. The work of the
Second Committee is crucial to the mandate of the United Nations as it steers
its work on the central role of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By
dealing with the eradication of poverty, financing for development, climate
change, globalization, food security and global partnerships, the Second
Committee is continuously engaged with issues of relevant and common global
concerns
Last year, H.E. Vanessa Frazier, Permanent
Representative of Malta to the UN, had served as Chair of the same Committee
for the 76th Session, successfully leading all 193 Member States of the UN to
adopt 37 resolutions related to Sustainable Development. Ms. Cassar had
assisted H.E. Frazier during her tenure as Chair.
Malta remains a strong supporter of sustainable
development and multilateralism, with the UN at its core.
