At it’s first meeting of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) held the elections for its new Bureau in which Mr Darren Camilleri, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York, was elected as its Vice-Chair for the 75th Session of the General Assembly. Mr Paul Hussar of Romania and Mr José Sanabria of Paraguay were also elected as Vice-Chairs, while Mr Jassim Sayar Al-Maawda of Qatar was elected to the position of Rapporteur. H.E. Ambassador Collen Kelapile, Permanent Representative of Botswana, was elected Chair of the Committee earlier this year.
This is the first time that Malta has been elected to this important post.
The Fourth Committee considers a broad range of issues covering a cluster of five decolonization-related agenda items, the effects of atomic radiation, questions relating to information, a comprehensive review of the question of peacekeeping operations, a review of special political missions, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the Report of the Special Committee on Israeli Practices and International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.
